Susan Rothenberg

"I’m pretty interested in this idea of looking down at a scene, getting distance from it and looking down upon it I’m almost positive it’s from my walks and the geography here—the creek bed and the arroyos. Sometimes I’m above, and sometimes if I’m walking in the creek I can’t see the clouds because the cliffs cut them off. And I can’t wait sometimes to get up, especially in the monsoon season. Then I see these tower-of-power clouds. And other times I’m on the top walking along, looking down into these bays, these meadows that have happened through erosion in the creek bed."

What every Midwestern Wifey Needs

I had to buy this. It made me laugh so hard, I almost peed. It was purchased at Michael's, of course.

Another thing seen around campus. a mark made in the water in the parking lot.

Hey Karen...I also took a picture of the snow, it's only took me a few days to post it....I loved how it was zipping around the corner in these almost stripey lines. The other one was some plant life I encountered on my walk home. It looked like the two types of plants were having a little weird dialogue. Hard to see in the picture, maybe...

Tarkovsky on Art

Andrei Tarkovsky on Symbols

"I am constantly being asked what this or that means in my films. It's unbearable! An artist does not have to be accountable for his intentions. I did not do any deep thinking about my work. I don't know what my symbols mean. I only desire to induce feelings, any feelings, in viewers. People always try to find "hidden" meanings in my films. But wouldn't it be strange to make a film while striving to hide one's thoughts? My images do not signify anything beyond what they are... We do not know ourselves that well: sometimes we express forces which cannot be grasped by any ordinary measure."

martin buber

He was a german philosopher.....I have been doing research on empathy for my thesis....He was quoted by one of the writers in an earlier post....He wrote a lot about relationships between people....but so much can be applied to painting....just a simple quote.

"All real living is meeting."

one for james...she even uses the three graces

you probably all know who zoe charlton is, but i didn't until tonight.

Snow from Porch

I was surprised to see it was snowing tonight, so I took a picture.

Pearl

I came across this the other day in my jewelry box. I haven't gotten it out in a while. It is a pearl that my grandfather found raking up oysters and gave to me when I was little.

Karen's Plant

Positive phototropism is the direction of a plant's growth towards the sun. I keep turning this plant trying to even out its growth, but as you can see, I haven't turned it in a while. I was thinking about this in relation to my work in the things that I gravitate towards.

losing vocabulary

did y'all hear that polaroid is going to stop making film?

richard serra

there's an interview charlie rose did with richard serra in 2001. i think a lot of what serra talks about relates to "painting and the struggle for the whole self." i don't know how to post a video so here's the website:
http://www.charlierose.com/shows/2001/12/14/1/an-hour-with-sculptor-richard-serra
then you can watch the follow up one if you want. if you haven't seen his work in person you should make a day trip to the dia:beacon next time you're in ny.

maybe more so in this one...

kelly might be interested...maybe not...

The World of John Currin...

can't explain it, but...

...there's something about the arcs - their rhythm, their relationships - that made me pause...
