that's a great article. the question that eventually comes up after debate and logical discussion is whether true graffiti should ever be in museums or galleries to begin with, which are very much part of the capitalistic control apparatus. the smaller galleries and such don't control the artists except by giving approval, which is in itself a form of control, but arguing that a city should support graffiti because the art world does makes no sense, because cities (by which i mean governments) can never allow unsupervised dissemination of information, which is at the heart of graffiti. graffiti art, the type that is in museums and galleries, is only done in the style of graffiti, often by some great graffiti artists, but it can never substitute for the unmitigated opinions of kids and punks and assholes that write what they want, when they want, just to have a say.
I like the idea of "unsupervised dissemination of information" existing in cities. Whether or not that concept is possible, is another issue all together. I thought of you Scott when I made this post. I am glad it struck a cord.
